Profile

Network engineer with more than fifteen years across service-provider, enterprise and hyperscale data-centre networks, from operating and managing Australian ISP and enterprise networks out of a remote office in Cambodia, to deploying and operating Amazon Web Services' global network. Juniper-certified at expert level (JNCIE-ENT #577) with deep Cisco and Juniper routing and switching, and a habit of turning repetitive operations into Python and Bash automation. Currently at IMC Trading in Sydney. Enjoys mentoring: has trained CCNA, JNCIA and JNCIS classes and onboarded new engineers at every stop.

Experience

Present

Network Engineer

IMC Trading · Sydney
  • Network engineering for a global market-making and trading firm. More details to come.
Amazon Web Services

Network Deployment Engineer

AWS · Data-centre network build
  • Built the complete network infrastructure for new AWS data centres and handed them over to customers, coordinating with multiple teams to deliver on schedule.
  • Owned and continuously improved the data-centre build process, turning manual steps into repeatable workflows.
  • Trained and supported new hires through onboarding.
Amazon Web Services

Network Operations Engineer (NetOps)

AWS · Global network operations
  • Responsible for the ongoing availability of the Amazon network and for every alarm on it — syslog, SNMP- and SSH-based monitoring — troubleshooting alone or across teams to mitigate global faults as fast as possible.
  • Developed Python automation modules that resolve network issues without human intervention, and workflows and scripts (Python, Bash) that engineers use day to day.
  • Identified new operational issues by collecting and analysing metrics, then designed the fixes; maintained the templates used for configuration changes, upgrades and hardware maintenance.
  • Worked with Network Reliability and Optimization to review new designs and validate tooling before hand-off to operations; peer-reviewed configuration and code changes.
  • Interviewed network-engineer candidates; trained and mentored interns and junior engineers.
  • Platforms: Cisco Nexus 7K, ASA 5585, Catalyst 3750/4500/6500; Juniper MX960, QFX5100, QFX3500, SRX5800; Linux-based commodity devices. Protocols: BGP, OSPF, MPLS, VRRP, xSTP, GLBP, TCP/IP.
eintellego Networks

Network Operations Manager

eintellego Networks · Cambodia branch (remote operations for Australian customers)
  • Ran day-to-day network operations for the branch: helpdesk tickets and workflow, daily reports and timesheets, and documentation of customer networks on the company wiki.
  • Managed the internal training programme — technologies used in daily work plus CCNA and JNCIA — and the team's learning of each customer network.
  • Assisted with projects, architecture and design as needed.
eintellego Networks

Network Engineer

eintellego Networks · Australian ISP, hosting, enterprise and university customers, supported remotely from Cambodia
  • Operated and maintained the core networks of small ISPs, hosting companies, enterprises and a university; designed, implemented and troubleshot with TCP/IP, OSPF, BGP, MPLS, QoS, firewalls, STP/MSTP and IPv4/IPv6.
  • Implemented BGP peering and transit for IPv4 and IPv6, tuned BGP load-balancing across upstream ISPs, and helped block DDoS attacks with the systems team and upstreams.
  • Built core networks on clustered Juniper SRX550 and MX5; assisted the CTO in migrating four Cisco 7200 border routers to Juniper MX5 and in building an ISP with MX80 border, ASR1000 LNS and A10 CGN.
  • Implemented switching for a new cloud environment (Cisco and HP) and a SAN network on H3C 5820X and Juniper EX4200 virtual chassis; designed and built a government network on ASA 5512, 2921 and 2960.
  • Set up network monitoring on Linux (Zabbix, Cacti, Nagios); managed firewall rules on Juniper SRX.
  • Platforms: Juniper SRX100–550, EX2200–4200, MX5/MX80 (plus SSG and MAG); Cisco 2960–6500, 2900, 7200, Nexus 5548, ASR1000, ASA 5500; HP, H3C and Huawei.
Teaching

Juniper Trainer · Cisco CCNA Instructor

eintellego Networks · Sunrise Institute
  • Trained and managed Juniper JNCIA and JNCIS-ENT classes at eintellego Networks.
  • Taught Cisco CCNA (CCNA-1 and CCNA-2) at Sunrise Institute.

Automation projects

PodLauncher

AWS
  • Builds and upgrades Juniper devices automatically as part of data-centre deployment.

Network turn-up and data-centre build workflows

AWS
  • Automated guidelines for corporate network turn-up and for the data-centre build process, used by engineers day to day.

Skynet auto-remediation module

AWS
  • Automatically remediates the Fastpath max-CPU-buffer alarm, removing a recurring manual fix.

Port-security removal

AWS
  • Script that removes port-security configuration across network devices safely at scale.
